Scooby Doo: Frankencreepy BG Development and Final Production Art

Paintings by Jeff Palm! The best paintings of the show although I also loved the Castle exteriors as much, see below.

These two by Robert Harand! Nice architectural detail!

My rough sketch of the castle entrance. This was done early on for the board artists to work from.

Early painting sample. Was trying to figure out the warm/cool thing that Paul wanted.

Another Robert Harand final from my rough.

Another rough of the Transylvania Train Depot. This was the first bg rough I did. At that time I was thinking it would have some fall like foliage around it but it was moved to more of a winter alpine location.

The final Lab painting. I still like to paint when I can although Jeff Palm and Bill Wray did most of the heavy lifting.
 Bill Wray painting!!!
 Another Bill Wray!!!
A Shawn McKelvey spooky forest painting!!

Animation is a team effort. When we work hard and do something cool of course we want to get recognized for it. I use this blog as a sort of portfolio but I want to highlight the process and the group effort that the team has put forth on this fun project. I did the rough sketches early on mostly for the board artists to work from but also to set a style direction to make sure the shots stay dynamic. If the roughs are done it helps the board guys and luckily they just dropped these shots right into the final. As I mentioned above Jeff Palm, Robert Harand, Shawn McKelvey and Bill Wray were an amazing team!!! Great work you guys!!!

Scooby Doo: Frankencreepy Velma Development and Final Production Art

After I was laid off from Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated in the summer of 2012, I took a needed vacation to Montana. When I got back, I was so done with WB. The low pay and heavy handed treatment of artists, I had enough. Plus after finishing the BEST Scooby Doo series EVER! I had no desire to do another Scooby. So I started hunting around for work and was hoping to jump onto the Mickey Shorts because I was freelancing some background work there but things got delayed and I ended up painting on a Curious George Halloween Special. While there I got a call from WB to art direct a Scooby Direct to video. I politely told them that I was not interested. Susan Ward asked me to at least meet this new director/producer Paul McEvoy so I said I would. Paul was so excited to meet me and had such enthusiasm for the project it was hard to say no to him. When I saw what the story was about, I was in. I am a big Young Frankenstein fan and this was going to be so fun for me. So on my lunch breaks I started sketching out some characters. This Velma is one I did back then and then over the next few months made some other concept sketches for the storyboard artists to work from. The final design which is the top one was finalized by Jim Stenstrum and Colored by Melanie Pava.

Mickey Mouse Croissant de Triomphe BGs

These were the BGs I did for this Mickey Mouse Short. This was the first one Disney did so I was asked to come and help out as a freelance painter. It was hard to do at first. I had to take a couple passes on the Cathedral shot but I started getting more confident by the time I did the rooftop shots. the texture layer we put over the the painting and the size of the files made my computer crash several times. I had to go out and buy a more powerful Mac to complete this work. I'm glad this short won two Emmys even though my part in it was small, it was nice to be a part of the team at least in the beginning. The only reason I didn't continue working on this was just timing. I was busy Art Directing a Scooby dtv called "Curse of the Frankencreep" which I was immersed in at the time and will soon be posting work from so stay tuned. I really loved working on that Scooby. Of course I loved Mickey too!
